Dr. Stevens was a nurse prior to graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1995. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine, and was a faculty member at UF in the Department of Internal Medicine prior to completing post-graduate education in OB/GYN.  In 2005, Dr. Stevens established the GYN Surgery Program at the NFSG VA Health center in Gainesville, and developed a GYN surgical consult service within the large geographic area that the NFSG Health system serves.   Dr. Stevens continues to maintain her board certifications in both OB/GYN and Internal Medicine.  Dr. Stevens completed the Master in Medical Education Program at UF in 2006. She has been involved with General Surgery education at the VA since 2003, and has been the Site Director for GYN residents at the VA since April 2013.

Dr. Stevens is the Women’s Health Medical Champion for NFSG VA and is involved in numerous committees advancing services for the growing women Veteran population.  She is involved at the regional and national level in the VA, and currently is the Chair of the National Surgery Office OB/GYN Surgery Advisory Board.  She lectures and advocates on Women Veterans issues.  She is a resource for other VA programs in the country that are starting up GYN surgery programs and has been recognized numerous times for her contributions to the VA.

Dr. Stevens is part of the faculty for the National VA Mini Residencies in Women’s Health.  The National VA Mini Residency program’s focus is improving skills of primary care providers within the VA to provide comprehensive health care for women.  She has also facilitated numerous local training sessions and conferences on Women Veterans Health issues.  Dr. Stevens has been directly involved with teaching Patient Safety within the VA, and implemented locally curriculum developed by the VA National Patient Safety Office.   Dr. Stevens has also mentored graduate students and has been involved in research with simulation and development of virtual patients.

Dr. Stevens currently provides comprehensive clinical and surgical care for Women Veterans at the Gainesville VA. As a hands-on surgeon, Dr. Stevens continues to provide excellent direct patient care with a focus on minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Stevens enjoys teaching the GYN residents about special needs of women Veterans and enhancing the resident’s surgical skills in total laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy.
